Location: Royal Artillery Barracks, Repository Road, Woolwich, London SE18 4BH
The Royal Artillery Barracks is a truly unique venue with history dating back to the 18th century. Its close proximity to Greenwich makes it highly accessible, with several underground lines and a new Crossrail link due to open by 2020.
The barracks date back to 1776 when the frontage was only half the size it is today. It was built to house the Royal Artillery who were outgrowing their original home in the Warren. Twenty-five years later, the architect James Wyatt designed the central arch to join to an identical façade expansion to the west. Today’s breathtakingly impressive Georgian façade hints at the elegance and history that lies inside.
Once indoors, the historic beauty of the Officers Mess is revealed, including paintings of Her Majesty the Queen and George Washington (who served in British Forces as a Militia man – today known as the Reserve Forces – before the war of independence in the U.S).
The Officers Mess dining room, with its embellished ceilings and chandeliers is an amazing backdrop for any event, whether it’s a corporate dinner or an exclusive wedding. The Queen has dined in this room every other year since her coronation and has kindly provided one of the chandeliers from Buckingham Palace – it’s twin is still in situ there today.
The Officers Mess suite also includes an impressive bar and ante room, as well as a beautiful conference room and two additional break out rooms. In addition, the Regimental staff are able to arrange a guided tour of the art and regimental silver as part of your event.
This impressive building also has a large conference room for up to 250 people as well as an additional dining/reception room and a second bar. The canteen in the barracks can also accommodate up to 400 people.
In addition the sports facilities at this location are impressive, with 4 tennis courts, 2 squash courts, 3 football pitches, a cricket pitch, a gym and a basketball court.
A large part of Woolwich Common also forms part of this incredible estate.
So whether you are looking for a filming location, a venue for your private or corporate event, training or a spectacular wedding venue then the Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich could be for you.
